Why I Chose This Stone: A Sunset Inside a Sapphire
One of my favourite parts of this job is finding gemstones that make me stop and look a little longer. You can spend plenty of time browsing beautiful stones, but occasionally something comes along that feels completely different.
Look at it face-on and you’ll see golden orange sitting above royal blue, almost like a glowing sky meeting the sea. To me, it looks like a miniature ocean sunset. A tiny painting, somehow contained inside a gemstone.
That’s what drew me to it. And the longer you look, the more there is to appreciate.
Two colours, with a horizon between them
The combination of golden orange and royal blue in this sapphire is extremely rare. What makes it even more unusual is how those colours are arranged.
They form an almost even horizontal split across the stone. That division gives it something resembling a horizon, with the warmer colour above and the deep blue below.
It’s this arrangement that creates the little sunset scene. Your eye reads it almost as a landscape, even though you’re looking at a sapphire small enough to wear on your hand.
I think that’s rather special. Nature has done something here that I would have struggled to dream up myself.
A stone we’re unlikely to find again
We work with unusual gemstones, so individuality is something I get to enjoy quite often. Even so, this one stands out.
Finding another sapphire with this particular combination of colours, in this arrangement, would be extremely unlikely. We may find other beautiful bi-colour sapphires, but I wouldn’t expect to find another quite like this.
That’s part of the appeal of choosing a stone like this one. Its identity comes from the details that make it impossible to simply order another matching example.
We can design another setting. We can make another ring. Finding another little ocean sunset inside a sapphire is rather less straightforward.
And yes, it’s unheated
This is also a natural, unheated sapphire, weighing 3.15 carats.
“Unheated” means it hasn’t undergone heat treatment to alter its colour or clarity. The colour combination that makes this stone so striking is present without that intervention.
For me, that adds another layer to its appeal. The golden orange, the royal blue and the way they sit together are already there in the stone. Our job is to give them a setting where they can be enjoyed.
Why its slightly uneven cut belongs to the story
There’s another detail worth pointing out: this sapphire has an antique-style emerald cut, with facets and an outline that aren’t perfectly even.
It was cut to preserve as much of the exceptionally rare material as possible. That means accepting a little irregularity in the finished shape.
Personally, I think it adds to the charm. With a stone like this, preserving the colour and character matters enormously. Those are the very things that made me choose it in the first place.
It rewards a closer look, and I like that about it.

Why this one stayed with me
I chose this sapphire because it makes me see something beyond the stone itself.
There’s a warmth to the orange and a depth to the blue, and that horizontal division brings the whole scene together. Every time I look at it, I come back to the same thought: a sunset over the ocean, small enough to sit on your finger.
Getting to find things like this is a very good reason to enjoy coming to work.
